Australia Updates Its Education Rules in 2026: What Nepalese Students Need to Know Before Applying for 2027

Australia remains a popular destination for Nepalese students seeking quality education and international career opportunities. However, the Australian Government has introduced several changes to its Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Framework in 2026.

These updates aim to improve education quality, protect international students and strengthen the integrity of Australia's international education system.

If you are planning to study in Australia in 2027, here are the important changes you should understand before choosing your college or university.

1. College Transfer Restriction Extended to 12 Months

One of the most important changes took effect on 2 October 2026.

Previously, international students studying at non-school education providers generally faced a six-month restriction period before transferring to another provider. This period has temporarily increased to 12 months.

  • The 12-month restriction applies to non-school international students.
  • The change remains in effect until 30 June 2027.
  • From 1 July 2027, the restriction period is scheduled to return to six months.
  • School students continue to follow the existing six-month restriction.

This means students should carefully research their preferred institution and course before accepting an offer and beginning their studies.

2. Ban on Education Agent Commissions for Onshore Transfers

From January 2026, Australia introduced a ban on education agent commissions for certain onshore student transfers.

This means education agents cannot receive commissions for recruiting international students who have already started studying with another registered Australian education provider, subject to the applicable transitional arrangements.

The purpose is to reduce unnecessary course transfers and encourage decisions that support students' educational interests.

3. Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) Course Cancellation

The Australian Government has also taken action concerning the BSB80120 Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning).

Its CRICOS registration was suspended and cancelled effective 5 October 2026.

  • New international students cannot enrol in this course from that date.
  • Students already enrolled can continue and complete their studies.

Students considering management-related courses should check that their chosen course is currently CRICOS registered and available to international students.

4. Changes Affecting New Education Providers

Between 19 May 2026 and 19 May 2027, new applications to the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for CRICOS registration of providers and courses have been temporarily suspended.

This measure responds to concerns about education quality and the integrity of the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

For students, this highlights the importance of choosing an established, properly registered education provider.

5. Stronger Education Quality and Student Protection

The broader ESOS reforms also strengthen requirements relating to education agents, provider registration and course quality.

These measures are intended to:

  • Improve transparency in international student recruitment.
  • Strengthen monitoring of education providers.
  • Reduce misleading recruitment practices.
  • Protect international students from poor-quality education.
  • Maintain Australia's reputation as a trusted study destination.

What Should Nepalese Students Do Before Applying?

If you are planning to study in Australia in 2027, consider these important steps:

  1. Research your college or university before accepting an offer.
  2. Confirm that your selected course is CRICOS registered.
  3. Understand the transfer restrictions before enrolling.
  4. Check course fees, duration, entry requirements and available intakes.
  5. Read your enrolment agreement and understand the provider's policies.
  6. Seek guidance before making major changes to your study plans.

Is Australia Still a Good Study Destination for Nepalese Students?

Yes. These changes do not mean that international students can no longer study in Australia. Rather, the reforms are designed to strengthen education standards, improve transparency and protect students.

With proper research and preparation, Nepalese students can continue exploring undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational study opportunities in Australia.
