University Description

Located at 100 College Drive, North Bay, Ontario, Nipissing University occupies 720 acres of Canadian Shield forest on a wooded escarpment overlooking Lake Nipissing, 3.5 hours north of Toronto and 4 hours northwest of Ottawa. The campus features modern facilities like the Harris Learning Library with group-study rooms, the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre with basketball/volleyball courts and a fitness center, and the NUSU Student Centre, housing On the Rocks (campus nightclub) and Bay Bistro (licensed restaurant). The new Simulation Centre, launched in April 2024, provides immersive learning for nursing, social work, and other disciplines. Outdoor amenities include hiking trails, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and a waterfall, supporting land-based education.

Nipissing offers over 30 undergraduate programs across three faculties: Arts and Science, Applied and Professional Studies, and the Schulich School of Education, plus a School of Graduate Studies. Popular programs include Bachelor of Arts (e.g., Criminal Justice, Psychology, Environmental Geography), Bachelor of Science (e.g., Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Biology and Technology), and professional programs like Nursing, Education, and Social Work. Unique dual-degree options, such as combining Business with Arts or Science, allow students to earn two degrees in five years. Partnership programs with Canadore College enable students to earn a bachelor’s degree and college diploma in four years (e.g., Criminology and Criminal Justice Policing Stream). Graduate offerings include master’s degrees in Education, Environmental Studies, History, Kinesiology, Mathematics, and Sociology, and a PhD in Education focused on educational sustainability.

The university enrolls about 3,590 full-time and 1,291 part-time undergraduates, plus 171 full-time and 1 part-time graduate students, with an 85.9% graduation rate, surpassing Ontario’s 77.3% average. The acceptance rate is approximately 70–78%, requiring a minimum 70% high school average (75% for Criminal Justice or Concurrent Education). International students, comprising a growing portion, need English proficiency (e.g., IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 83) and pay tuition of about CAD $7,435–$7,790 (including fees). The university supports students through peer tutoring, career counseling, Indigenous Services, Disability Services, and the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU), which offers a food bank, health plan, and Safe Ride Home program. Recent initiatives include a $5 million grant in 2025 from The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation to expand rare dementia research and support services.

Campus life is vibrant, with events like the NUBASE Shoot for Change Anti-Racism Game, a Powwow, and the NU Café for alumni-student mentorship. The campus’s northern setting supports programs like Environment and Physical Geography, with field trips and internships, while the Dr. Elizabeth Thorn Literacy Centre and research hubs foster academic growth. Despite its strengths, some students note challenges like limited course offerings, reliance on cars for transportation (buses stop at 7:30 PM), and occasional communication issues with departments. Nipissing’s commitment to equity, indigenization, and a personalized education experience makes it a compelling choice for students seeking a supportive, nature-rich learning environment.
