Canada Study Permit Financial Requirements for 2027: How Much Money Do Nepalese Students Need?

Canada continues to be an attractive destination for Nepalese students looking for internationally recognised qualifications and opportunities for personal and professional development.

However, before applying for a Canadian study permit, students must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to cover their education and living expenses.

For students planning to study in Canada in 2027, understanding the latest financial requirements is an important part of preparing a successful application.

1. Latest Canada Study Permit Financial Requirement for 2027

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), students applying for a study permit on or after 1 September 2026 must demonstrate the following amount for living expenses if they are studying outside Quebec.

Required Living Expenses (CAD per Year)

  • 1 person (student only): CAD $23,448
  • 2 family members: CAD $29,192
  • 3 family members: CAD $35,888
  • 4 family members: CAD $43,572
  • 5 family members: CAD $49,419
  • 6 family members: CAD $55,736
  • 7 family members: CAD $62,054
  • Each additional family member: CAD $6,318

Important: These amounts cover living expenses only. Tuition fees and transportation costs must be demonstrated separately.

2. How Much Money Does a Nepalese Student Need?

For a single Nepalese student applying to study outside Quebec, the minimum financial calculation includes three main expenses:

  • First-year tuition fees.
  • CAD $23,448 for living expenses.
  • Transportation costs to and from Canada.

Example calculation:

Suppose a student has an annual tuition fee of CAD $18,000.

  • First-year tuition fees: CAD $18,000
  • Living expenses: CAD $23,448
  • Transportation costs: Additional amount required

Total estimated funds required (excluding transportation): CAD $41,448.

This means the student needs to demonstrate at least CAD $41,448, plus transportation expenses, in this example.

The actual amount depends on the student's institution, tuition fees, travel arrangements and personal circumstances.

3. What Documents Can Be Used as Proof of Funds?

IRCC accepts different types of financial documents to demonstrate that students have sufficient funds.

Common examples include:

Bank statements

  • Recent bank statements showing available funds.
  • Statements from Canadian or foreign bank accounts.
  • Evidence explaining the source of significant deposits.

Education loan

  • Official education loan approval documents from a recognised financial institution.
  • Supporting documents showing the approved loan amount and availability.

Scholarship or financial assistance

  • Official scholarship award letters.
  • Documents showing the amount and duration of financial assistance.
  • Evidence of any remaining expenses not covered by the scholarship.

Tuition payment receipts

  • Proof of tuition fees already paid to the Canadian institution.
  • Receipts for accommodation fees, if applicable.

Financial support from parents or sponsors

  • Sponsor's bank statements.
  • Employment or income verification documents.
  • Sponsor support letter.
  • Documents establishing the relationship between the student and sponsor.

IRCC may assess both the amount of money available and its source. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/get-documents/financial-support.html

4. Can Parents Sponsor a Nepalese Student?

Yes. Parents can financially support their children's education in Canada.

However, students should provide clear evidence that the sponsor has sufficient funds and a reliable source of income.

Supporting documents may include:

  • Parents' bank statements.
  • Employment verification letters.
  • Salary slips or income documents.
  • Business registration and business income evidence, where applicable.
  • Sponsor support letter.
  • Birth certificate or other evidence of the relationship.

Students should ensure that the financial documents are consistent and that the source of funds can be explained.

5. Is Showing Money in a Bank Account Enough?

Not necessarily.

Having the required balance in a bank account does not automatically guarantee study permit approval.

IRCC may examine:

  • Whether the funds are genuinely available.
  • The source of the money.
  • The financial history and consistency of transactions.
  • Whether the sponsor can reasonably provide the promised support.
  • Whether sufficient funds are available for the entire study period.

Students should avoid relying on unexplained large deposits or presenting financial documents that cannot be verified.

6. Do Students Need to Show Funds for the Entire Course Duration?

Students must demonstrate sufficient financial resources for the first year of their studies.

If the programme lasts longer than one year, they must also explain how they intend to finance the remaining duration of their education.

For example, students may provide evidence of:

  • Continuing family income.
  • Long-term savings.
  • Scholarships covering multiple academic years.
  • Education loans.
  • Other reliable financial support.

7. Important Things to Remember for the 2027 Intake

Before submitting a Canadian study permit application, Nepalese students should:

  1. Calculate their first-year tuition and living expenses.
  2. Check the latest IRCC financial requirement.
  3. Prepare genuine and verifiable financial documents.
  4. Explain the source of funds clearly.
  5. Arrange sponsor documents where applicable.
  6. Prepare evidence of funding for the remaining study period.
  7. Check whether a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) is required.
  8. Review the latest document checklist applicable to their application.

8. Is the CAD $23,448 Requirement Final for All of 2027?

Not necessarily.

The Government of Canada reviews and updates its living-expense financial requirements annually.

The CAD $23,448 amount applies to applications submitted from 1 September 2026 under the currently published requirements. Students applying later in 2027 should check the official IRCC website for any new financial threshold.
